Quick Summary

A stainless steel bar top or beverage counter does different work to a commercial kitchen bench. It handles constant liquid contact, drip tray integration, underbar equipment cutouts, and in many Brisbane venues a mix of front-of-house finish requirements and back-of-house hygiene demands on the same fabricated surface. A1 Custom Stainless & Kitchens fabricates custom stainless steel bar tops, tap counters, drip trays, glass wash sink benches, and pass-through service counters for restaurants, bars, cafes, and breweries across Brisbane and South East Queensland. What Is a Stainless Steel Bar Top or Beverage Counter?

A stainless steel bar top is the service surface of a bar — the horizontal counter between the bartender and the customer. A beverage counter covers the full service area in a bar, cafe, or brewery taproom: the top surface, the underbar drip tray, the glass wash sink bench, the ice well cutout, and the tap font mounting surface.

In a commercial hospitality context, these surfaces are fabricated to exact dimensions because bar fit-outs are bespoke. Bar length, depth, and return configuration vary from venue to venue, and underbar equipment cutouts must be positioned precisely relative to tap fonts and the front-of-house service flow. Stainless steel handles all of the demands a bar surface places on a material: constant liquid contact from spills, condensation, and washing, commercial cleaning agent exposure, heat from glasswashers and equipment, and a surface a council EHO can inspect and walk away satisfied from.

Typical applications in Brisbane hospitality venues include:

  • Bar service tops in restaurants, hotels, and standalone bars
  • Beverage counters in brewery taprooms and craft beer venues with multiple tap fonts
  • Coffee shop and cafe counters with integrated sink, drip tray, and espresso equipment cutouts
  • Pass-through service counters between kitchen and front-of-house in counter-service restaurants

When Is a Stainless Steel Bar Top Required in a Queensland Venue?

No Queensland regulation mandates stainless steel as the material for a bar top or beverage counter specifically. Food Standards Code Standard 3.2.3 sets the performance standard: surfaces in areas where food or beverages are prepared, handled, or served must be non-porous, able to withstand repeated cleaning with commercial sanitisers, and must not provide harbourage for pests.

In a commercial bar setting, the surface takes constant liquid contact, residual organic matter from beverages, and daily exposure to cleaning chemicals. Painted timber, laminate, and unfinished materials fail the impervious, easily cleaned standard quickly in a high-throughput bar environment. Stainless steel does not. Queensland EHOs inspect bar surfaces in licensed venues as part of periodic food premises inspections, and a surface that cannot be demonstrated to be effectively cleanable is a finding at inspection, regardless of how recently it was installed.

Choosing the Right Grade: 304 vs 316

For most Brisbane indoor bar tops and beverage counters, 304 grade is the correct specification. It handles standard liquid contact, commercial bar cleaning agents, and daily sanitiser wipe-downs without degradation over its service life.

316 is the right specification where the bar is on a rooftop or outdoor terrace exposed to Queensland weather and salt-air, where the venue is within a few kilometres of the ocean and the bar top is exposed to outdoor or semi-outdoor conditions, or where the bar uses very high-frequency chloride-based sanitiser application throughout every service. Most indoor Brisbane bar tops in non-coastal locations are correctly specified in 304. Specifying 316 where 304 is sufficient adds unnecessary cost. Bar Top Configuration: Drip Trays, Ice Wells, and Underbar Cutouts

The underbar is where most of the functional complexity of a stainless steel bar fabrication lives, and every element of it must be specified before the fabrication drawing is produced.

A stainless steel drip tray sits directly below the tap fonts and catches drip and overflow. It is either removable — a tray that lifts out for cleaning — or integrated into the bench surface as a fixed welded unit with a floor waste connection. Integrated drip trays are more hygienic and more common in high-volume venues. Removable trays suit smaller bars where volume does not justify a fixed drain connection.

An ice well is a stainless steel insert cut into the bar top to allow an insulated ice container to sit flush with the service surface. The cutout dimensions must match the ice well unit exactly and are cut at the workshop before the bench leaves for installation. The glass wash sink in a bar is typically a single or double bowl sink bench at bar surface height, with a rinser unit cutout and a waste connection, fabricated as a single welded unit in the same grade and finish as the rest of the bar.

Under-counter fridges, keg lines, glasswasher connections, and cable runs all require clearance within the underbar cabinet. The bar top fabrication must account for every service penetration and equipment footprint before the drawing is finalised. A drawing produced without confirming the underbar equipment schedule produces cutouts in the wrong positions — the most common and most expensive bar fabrication variation.

How Much Does a Stainless Steel Bar Top Cost in Brisbane?

Bar top cost depends on total length, configuration complexity, number of cutouts, grade, and finish. A straightforward flat bar top in 304 brushed with a single drip tray is at the lower end of the fabrication cost range. A complex multi-section bar with integrated ice wells, multiple sink benches, a fixed-drain drip tray, and a pass-through counter is significantly more involved and priced accordingly.

The main cost drivers are linear metres of bar top, the number and complexity of cutouts, and whether the bar top incorporates recessed sections, overhangs, or non-standard profiles. Each ice well, drip tray drain, glass wash bowl, and equipment penetration adds fabrication time beyond a straight bench run. Be wary of bar top quotes from suppliers who have not measured the site — a bar corner that appears square on a drawing is frequently not square on site, and a per-linear-metre rate that does not account for that is not a reliable budget figure.

How a Stainless Steel Bar Top Works Alongside Your Other Kitchen Equipment

A bar fabrication in a full hospitality venue fitout sits alongside the kitchen fabrication scope, the joinery scope, and the back-of-house equipment installation. When the bar top, glass wash sink bench, and pass-through counter are all fabricated from one site measure, heights are consistent, grade and finish match throughout, and the installation is completed in a single visit rather than across multiple trades.

The pass-through counter that connects the bar to the kitchen sits at the intersection of the kitchen bench scope and the bar fabrication scope. When both are in the same fabrication project, the pass-through height, sill profile, and heat lamp mount are all confirmed from one site measure and consistent with both sides of the bench run. Frequently Asked Questions

Can you match an existing stainless steel finish on a bar top extension?

Usually yes. The most common finish on commercial bar tops is a #4 brushed finish, which can be matched closely in new fabrication. A perfect match on a very old or heavily worn surface is not always achievable, but the difference is typically not visible in a venue lighting environment. Confirm the existing finish with your fabricator before the quote.

Do you fabricate the underbar cabinet as well as the top?

No. We fabricate the stainless steel tops, drip trays, sink benches, and cutout surfaces. Underbar cabinetry is typically built by a joiner or fit-out contractor. We work alongside the joiner to ensure the stainless top dimensions and fixing method suit the cabinet construction.

What is the lead time for a bar top fabrication?

A straightforward bar top with a single drip tray and glass wash sink typically takes one to two weeks in fabrication from a confirmed drawing. A complex multi-section bar with integrated ice wells, multiple sink benches, and a pass-through counter takes longer. Confirm the lead time with your quote.

Do you fabricate outdoor bar tops for rooftop venues?

Yes. Outdoor rooftop bar tops are fabricated in 316 grade to handle UV, rain, and coastal salt-air exposure. Drainage slope for rain runoff is confirmed at the site measure.

Can you handle a single-piece bar top order without a full fitout scope?

Yes. Single-piece orders are welcome. We fabricate bar tops, drip trays, glass wash sinks, and pass-through benches as standalone items or as part of a full kitchen and bar fitout. There is no minimum scope requirement.

How do I prepare for the site measure?

Have the underbar equipment schedule confirmed before the site measure: ice well unit dimensions, glasswasher footprint, under-counter fridge positions, tap font positions, and keg line entry points. These are the details that drive the cutout positions on the fabrication drawing, and changes to them after the drawing is produced are variations.
